The Comprehensive Education Assessment
The first step in supporting a student is to create a Comprehensive Education Assessment in the system for the student - an electronic education record that identifies every potential source of college credit. It accounts for all potential sources of college credit that have been identified at the time support was rendered. In other words, it show what you have achieved, while the degree plans show how much of this can be applied. This Assessment addresses both traditional and non-traditional college credit, which could include:
- Credit for college courses already completed by the student at an accredited college or university
- College credit for professional training completed at more than a thousand other corporations, businesses, and government agencies, as applicable
- College credit for military training and experiences, for those employees who are veterans
- College credit-by-examinations, for those who have taken any of more than 100 college tests for credit
- College credit for professional certifications and licenses, as applicable
- College credit for adult experiential learning, as evaluated by participating colleges and universities
Sounds complex? It is not complex at all. In fact, if you click on the next button on the left (Simplicity is Paramount), you will see just how easy it is for staff to process students. Why is this the first step? Because this serves as an electronic collection of all the potential credit the student brings to the table, which can then be instantly merged into degrees from your college or university. Do you have a student who is unsure as to which degree to pursue? With AutoDP, you can empower the student to compare each to find the curriculum that best fits the credit he or she brought to the table. As the student transitions upward from your Associate's degree to your baccalaureate degree, the credit will flow right into the curricula of the degree desired. Once again, the students could easily explore majors in several subjects as they decide which meets their needs, goals, and desires.
What information is presented on the degree plans?
The degree plans present students with the information they need to know to make an informed decision in selecting the degree they would like to earn. The curriculum is presented for the degree, not only displaying every course required with course descriptions and prerequisite information, but also depicting where the credit the student has already earned should apply to the curriculum requirements. Sometimes students change their minds when they see the types of courses required for the field of study in which they first indicated an interest. Not a problem. With AutoDP, your staff can quickly and easily create new degree plans in other subjects for the student to consider.
Note how in the example shown on the right, the course that this student took at his local college, ENG 10003 Freshman English I, digitally streamed into the curriculum requirement for Composition I (ENGL 1301) at this college. On the right hand column are two columns: The first is Credit Required for the degree. The second is Credit Applied to the curriculum requirement. Also, notice how this student has not yet fulfilled the requirements for Composition II. The student sill understand this by the absence of any credit in the second column. At the end of the entire curriculum is a total: For example, it would automatically sum the two columns and present 60 semester hours required, 21 semester hours applied.
